McLaren “Breakthrough Performance”

The McLaren spot repeatedly cuts between four people: a driver, a dirt bike rider, a violinist and a ballet dancer. All four are focused and precise, demonstrating their unique artistry as they drive, ride, dance and play. Approaching the sound design, the challenge was to balance the roaring machinery of the two vehicles with the subtlety and grace of the two performers.

To create an immersive sense of motion, we used extensive panning and doppler effects throughout. For the vehicles, we used thunderous engines, screeching tires and the earthy spray of kicked up dirt. For the performers, we used gentle wind and airy, cerebral sounds. These contrasting moments rapidly alternate, giving the spot a propulsive ebb and flow. Finally, we built imaginative cinematic effects that could tie these disparate elements together, resulting in a piece that is dynamic but wholly cohesive.
